How to Fix a Spray Bottle That Stopped Working
1. Check the nozzle position and liquid level
Start with the easiest possibilities. Many trigger sprayers have OFF, SPRAY or STREAM settings, while some mist sprayers use a twist lock. Make sure the outlet is actually open.
Then look at the liquid level. The end of the dip tube must remain in the liquid for the pump to pick it up. If the bottle sprays only when you tilt it, there may simply be too little liquid left or the tube may be too short.
2. Prime the pump
A new spray bottle or one that has been stored empty may contain air in the pump and dip tube. Operate the trigger several times with the dip tube submerged until liquid fills the pathway and reaches the nozzle.
If the bottle starts spraying normally after this, the sprayer was unprimed rather than broken.
3. Clean a clogged nozzle
If the bottle used to spray normally and the pattern gradually became weak, uneven or drippy, check the nozzle next. Dried product or mineral residue can restrict the small passages that form the spray.
For a reusable bottle containing a water-rinseable product, remove the sprayer and rinse the nozzle with warm water. You can also place the dip tube in clean warm water and operate the trigger to flush water through the pump and nozzle.
Avoid forcing a needle deeply into a fine spray opening. Scratching or enlarging the orifice may clear the blockage but permanently change the spray pattern.
4. Inspect the dip tube
If the trigger moves but the bottle sprays air, unscrew the sprayer and inspect the tube. It should be firmly connected to the pump inlet, free of cracks or sharp kinks, and long enough to reach close to the bottom of the bottle.
The lower end also needs room for liquid to enter. If a straight-cut tube sits tightly against a flat bottle base, pickup can be restricted. An appropriate tube length or angled end helps keep the inlet open.
A loose tube can be reattached. A cracked tube should be replaced because the pump may draw air through the crack instead of pulling liquid from the bottle.
5. Flush and test the pump
If the nozzle and dip tube look normal, test whether the pump itself can move liquid.
For a reusable sprayer that can be safely rinsed with water, place the dip tube in clean water and operate the trigger. After priming, a working pump should draw water up the tube and send it through the nozzle.
If the trigger moves normally but no water rises through the tube, an internal valve, piston, seal or return component may be stuck or damaged. Flushing can clear dried residue, but a physically damaged pump is usually better replaced than dismantled.
6. Check the liquid if the sprayer works with water but not with the product
This test tells you something important. If the sprayer produces a good spray with clean water but becomes weak, clogged or difficult to pump with the original liquid, the sprayer itself may not be the problem.
Thicker liquids move more slowly through small pump and nozzle passages. Suspended particles can obstruct them. Products that dry or crystallize around the nozzle can also disturb the spray pattern.
Do not keep cleaning the same sprayer if the problem returns every time the same liquid is added. The liquid and dispensing system may simply be a poor match.
7. Replace a damaged spray head
Cleaning cannot repair a cracked trigger, split pump housing, damaged nozzle or failed internal pump component.
If the nozzle and tube are clear, the sprayer has been primed, and it still cannot draw clean water, replacing the spray head is usually the practical fix. The same applies when the trigger will not return or the nozzle has been physically damaged and no longer produces its original spray pattern.
What If the Sprayer Works With Water but Not With Your Product?
For one reusable household bottle, the solution may be as simple as changing the spray head. For a product being developed for sale, this result means something different: the sprayer needs to be matched to the liquid and the way the product is supposed to be applied.
A fine mist sprayer is designed around a smaller, finer spray and is commonly used for products such as facial mists, toners, fragrances and other light liquids. A standard trigger sprayer delivers a different output and is more appropriate when the application needs a stronger or more directed spray, such as many surface-care, home-care or larger-area applications.
